Bang Tao Beach Guide

Bang Tao is a study in contrasts, with the luxurious resorts and villas along its 6km (4 mile) stretch of beach just a few minutes' away from the town of Cherng Talay, where many villagers still make their living as their ancestors did - by fishing, farming and rubber tapping.

The northern tip of the beach, so far untouched by development, is still an area where visitors might find that they have the beach to themselves. Apart from going to the beach and a few bars and restaurants there's not much that you need to leave your resort for.

Taking up a huge area in the middle of Bang Tao beach, Laguna Phuket, one of Asia's largest resort complexes, comprises of 6 luxury hotels, a golf course and residential housing.

A wide range of activities - including a ropes course and rock climbing, windsurfing, elephant riding and kids' sports - is available for guests of Laguna's Sheraton Grande, Dusit Laguna, Laguna Beach, Allamanda, Laguna Holiday Club and Banyan Tree Phuket resorts, and some are open to outside visitors as well.

Play a round of golf at the Laguna Phuket course, practice your swing on the driving range nearby or go horseback riding along the beach. Afterwards, indulge in a massage and spa treatment at the world renowned Banyan Tree spa or at other retreats nearby.

Of course there's more to Bang Tao than just Laguna, it's also home to many other resorts.

The Beach (our guide for all you beach lovers)

Bang Tao beach is roomy to say the least, many parts towards the north have no beachfront development at all. Often you see people riding horses up and down the beach as the afternoon gets cooler.

Mainly only used by guests of the hotels here you'll find yourself relaxing in a secluded paradise, with a perfect sunset every evening.

Bang Tao Beach Nightlife

Many upmarket and luxury hotels are located close to Bang Tao creating a more distinct and low key nightlife...

Often guests don't leave their hotel however the are some lively bars and restaurants, even live music every night for those who do.

Patong is within reach for a lively night out, just 25 minutes taxi ride.

Bang Tao Beach Restaurants, Food & Dining

This area has a particularly good choice of top-end eateries, many of Phuket's best restaurants are within easy reach of the resorts and hotels of Bang Tao.

There are many fine dining options within Laguna's resorts, a decent range of restaurants have also sprung up down the road in recent years to cater to the increasing number of visitors to the area.

Shopping in Bang Tao

Some of the island's best finds for antiques and other treasures can be found at Laguna's Canal Village and in the rows of shops just outside the Laguna entrance. The open-air village markets are also worth visiting, if only to take in the sights and sounds of a typical Thai bazaar. A huge range is on sale including fruit and vegetables, fresh meat and fish, clothes, cooked food (take away), toys, shoes and more.

There's a small supermarket in Cherng Talay for groceries. The closest large supermarket is in Patong, a 25 minute drive away.
