Schooling in Phuket
As Phuket has grown more cosmopolitan, education has kept pace.
Below is a list of schools, universities and colleges now operating
on the island:
British
Curriculum International School, Formerly Dulwich International
College, the British Curriculum International School offers a British
education from Kindergarten to Year 13. Pupils can choose from a
variety of subjects at IGCSE level and the higher level International
Baccalaureate. B.C.I.S. is located in a beautifully landscaped and
accessible campus right in the centre of Phuket Island.
Greenhouse
International Pre-school An international pre-school for
Children ages 1 to 6 years. Learning through play with parent participation
encouraged.
QSI
International School of Phuket (Nursery to Grade 12). A
private international school which follows an American curriculum.
Prince
of Songkhla University, Phuket campus offers a courses with
special emphasis on tourism, including a four-year English-curriculum
degree course in hotel management.
Rajabhat University, which, also provides courses for the
training of "coastal guides" specializing in natural history and
also tour guides.
Phuket Vocational College - provision mainly for Thai nationals.
A growing number of private language schools which specialise in
ESL and English for the hospitality industry.
Education in Thailand
Education in Thailand is free and compulsory for all Thai children
between the ages of 7 and 14, and about 90 percent of the children
are enrolled in either public primary schools or those operated
by Buddhist monasteries. Only 33 percent of all eligible children
attend secondary schools.
Children are officially required to receive six years of education,
and the government has announced its intention to increase that
number to nine years. The literacy rate is 93 percent, higher than
that of most other countries of Southeast Asia.
