Located in the mainland province of Phang Nga just north of Phuket Island, Khao Lak has only recently been "discovered." The area stretches across three national parks and offers nature lovers an unspoiled landscape of beaches, hills, mountains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries. Eco-tours operate daily and include elephant trekking and, in season, kayaking along the river. This area probably deserves more time and accommodation is available. An overnight stay is recommended.

The Similan Islands National Park consists of nine, densely wooded islands fringed with rocky outcrops and gorgeous beaches with fine talcum powder-like sand. The main attraction of these islands however, is the diving. The Similans offer an incredibly varied underwater landscape. Day trips operate from November through April, but serious divers should consider a 4/6 day "liveaboard" trip. Non-divers and snorkellers can also visit for the day. Take a speedboat or the hydrofoil, which allows enough time for superb snorkelling and sightseeing.
